Sacred Music

Cathy has been making music in church her entire life. As a child she sang and rang handbells in the Lutheran church that her grandparents founded, then as a teenager she would play trumpet and piano, and later organ, for services. Feeling a call to continue this as a career, she earned a Bachelor’s of Music from the University of North Texas with a Specialization in Church Music and a Master’s in Sacred Music from Boston University’s School of Theology. From there she went on to build music programs in four New England UCC churches, sharing the joy of singing and playing instruments in worship with hundreds of children and adults. She currently serves as Minister of Music for South Church in Andover, Massachusetts, where she oversees and directs four children’s choruses, an adult choir, handbells, and the worship band. She also provides Music Ministry consulting for Protestant churches, giving congregations the tools they need to develop and grow their music programs. Her sacred music experience, theological training, and adept interpersonal skills make her a valuable resource for congregations who may be in transition, are experiencing conflict, or simply want a fresh perspective. If you would like to invite her to assist your music ministry as a guest clinician or consultant, visit the Request|Connect|Book page to be in touch.

Education

A good teacher not only provides the tools required to achieve greater skill, but also inspires their students to be more creative, disciplined, and curious. After having the fortunate experience of studying with many inspirational organists, conductors, vocalists, and pianists, Cathy works to do the same for others. Lessons and rehearsals should be tailored to the specific goals or each student, while developing proper technique and historically-informed performance practices. She works to build lasting relationships with her students, adding to the essential support-system that every aspiring musician needs.

As a choir director, she begins teaching children from infancy, setting the tone that music should be a part of every human life. As children progress through her choir program they are exposed to music from different cultures, genres, and time periods. By the time they graduate from her program, not only can they read music but their eyes have been opened to a diverse world of sound and possibility. She has been directing children’s choruses for over 25 years, giving young singers a safe place to experiment with their voices, teaching them how to sing organically, freely, and with confidence, giving hundreds of youth life-changing experiences and friendships centered around music.

As an organ instructor, her students have gone on to to major in performance, receiving scholarships at highly-acclaimed music schools and performing recitals in the Boston area. She is a teacher with the American Guild of Organists’ Young Organist Initiative and also enjoys leading youth-focused fun events like Pedals, Pipes & Pizza, to promoting an interest for the next generation of organists.

Cathy also serves as Sub-Dean for the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is on the executive board for the Belmont Parents of Music Students and One Spirit Foundation.

If you would like to join one of Cathy’s choruses or begin organ instruction under her tutelage, please visit Request|Connect|Book and say hello. Her choruses are through South Church in Andover, Mass, which offer an extravagant welcome to all. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING…

“Cathy is both a skilled conductor, equally comfortable leading us in Bach, Mendelssohn, Duruflé, Rutter, or South African gospel music, and also a truly gifted organist and pianist with a similarly extensive repertoire. Equally important are Cathy’s many notable personal traits: her patience, her enthusiasm, her consistency, her ability to effectively community, her gentle prodding to always improve, her flexibility, her gratitude, her obvious love of what she does, and finally her easy comfort with sharing her own faith. We are so lucky to be able to work with her each week!” Bob and Mary, retired Academic Physician and PhD Bookbinder/Restorer, respectfully

“Cathy’s teaching is clear, innovative, and humane. Her method encourages her students to reach their highest potential by teaching a strong technical foundation.” Savannah, Organ Performance Major

“I gained such a deep love and appreciation for music with Cathy. Even 20 years later I’m falling back onto the lessons she taught me. Every time I get frustrated or start to struggle, I can hear Cathy encouraging me not to give up. This doesn’t only apply to music but also to the rest of my life: there are many things I’ve struggled with, but I’ve always been able to feel Cathy encouraging me even when she wasn’t there.” Andrew, Music Lover and Former Chorister

“It was a privilege and blessing to work with Cathy Meyer as our Minister of Music. Her unique combination of musical genius, skilled direction and teaching, and genuine warmth and heart made every opportunity to sing with her feel like a special gift. Her creative and visionary leadership helped our music ministry grow in so many ways, including through our youth programming. My boys loved working with “Miss Cathy” both through the youth choir programs and Vacation Bible School. I am forever grateful for her role in their early music education as well as empowering them to help lead worship by giving them the confidence to sing (sometimes even short solos) in front of the congregation. Cathy is a force of awesomeness, light, music, and love! ” Jennifer, M.Ed, Parent of Choristers

“I love how the Cherub Choir gives my family the opportunity to experience God’s love and to participate in the of the church together. We sing, dance, laugh, and make friends together, we practice songs in the car, before bed, or whenever the Spirit strikes, and then one Sunday a month we experience the joy and excitement of participating in the church service together. We are so excited to be members of the Cherub Choir not only because it’s fun, but because of how joyfully Ms. Cathy shares through music God’s never-ending love for each child and caregiver.” Kate, LICSW, Parent of Choristers
